Building my own plane

Tuesday, April 25 2006

I have been dealing with a strong desire to build my own plane lately.  The plane of my desires has been the Van's RV-10.  This plane is a 4 place single engine airplane based on a Lycoming IO-520 Engine.   Cruises in the 170 MPH range with about 1100 lb useful load.

I have a mile of obstacles before I can consider starting on a project ot this size.

  • A bigger house with a shop
  • More free time - Job and Personal
  • Tools, Tools tools.    There are some great tools I will get to acquire before embarking on such a project.

The advantages of a homebuilt are

  • Price/Performance very favorable
  • New aircraft for the price of a 30 year old plane
  • A project you can really be proud of

Disadvantages

  • Long hours to construct - don't get me wrong, it will be fun.  Fun like a marathon.
  • Resale value - Not sure how resale figures on an experimental aircraft.
